For an authentic taste of Italian gelato near Rittenhouse Claridge, you'd be well advised to stop by Capogiro. This gelato cafe, located on the corner of 20th and Sansom streets, serves some of the best gelato you'll find anywhere in Philadelphia—or elsewhere. For the uninitiated, gelato is a frozen dessert; some say it's the Italian counterpart to American ice cream. Best of all, gelato contains roughly half the fat and calories of ice cream!
Here, gelato is made is small batches, using only premium, seasonal ingredients, some of which are sourced from area farms. Imported ingredients, like Sicilian pistachios and hazelnut paste, are used, as well. Flavors are as inventive as they are delicious, ranging from Thai coconut milk and Mexican coffee to rosemary honey goat's milk. Sorbet flavors include champagne mango and lime cilantro.
If the scope of flavors has you overwhelmed, the helpful staff will gladly serve you a free sample. Note that this popular cafe gets especially crowded in the summer, when savvy locals swing by for a frozen treat with which to cool off.
